5 Months After First Budokan Concert, The Release of New Single “Namidairo”. Interview as follows!

Last spring, her 2nd album “Can’t Buy My Love” was a big hit. Also in November, YUI had her first Budokan concert. Five months later, we present to you the interview and info on her new single “Namidairo”.
Being the main theme song for Asahi Broadcasting Corporation drama “4 Shimai Tanteidan”, how would it be like? Also, what has she gained after her first Budokan concert?

- Since this is the first time we meet after your Budokan concert, please tell us more about it. It was a grand event, wasn’t it?
YUI: Yes, indeed. Budokan is a historical place, so I wanted to treasure the time I spent performing in there. I also felt I did my best in the concert. I wanted to bring out more energy and power than I thought I have, and I did it, so it was a great achievement.

YUI Live 2007 at Nippon Budokan

- The opening of the concert was really unforgettable. Carrying your guitar case, you suddenly appeared from nowhere, and walked down the centre aisle, sat down with your legs crossed and started playing. It was a ‘street performance’ at Budokan! Really touching.
YUI: Thank you. Yes, I tried to create the image of me performing street live in the past. Even though it was cold then, I wasn’t bothered by it. I looked up to see the beautiful stars in the sky. I was reminiscing as I sang.

- When you played and sang “Tokyo” for the encore, you took a deep breath while strumming before entering the chorus. Was it because all the memories came flooding back?
YUI: Yes, it would feel weird if there was complete silence, so I tried to calm myself down by strumming the guitar (before entering the chorus). At that time, I could hear voices of “Gambatte”. I felt I couldn’t carry on singing, but I managed to finish the song.

- Now, as I think about it, it was a really touching scene; my tears are welling up.
YUI: I really tried my best at Budokan, so I think I’ve taken a step further (and grown) from there.

- You started on Namidairo after the Budokan Concert, right?
YUI: Yes. I did it with the motivation of wanting to take a step further. The melody of the chorus was made halfway during my 2nd single. When I was told the theme was about love, it (the melody) just came to me. Then I started making it in to a ballad.

- How do you arrive at the title “Namidairo”?
YUI: When I was writing the song, the word happened to appear in the lyrics. Then I used it as a temporary title for the song, but it became the actual title eventually. Whenever I imagine the feeling of “namidairo”, the lyrics just appear naturally.

- Are you the type of person who says “I’m fine (daijyoubu)”, even when you’re not?
YUI: Sometimes. (lol)

- Me too. (lol)
YUI: Well, most females are like that. I imagined that the main character in the drama is like that too. A detective has a strong image, but weak at times. I feel that he/she always fluctuates between the two extremes. When someone becomes “namidairo”, he/she becomes easily hurt. That’s how I want to bring up the feeling through the song.

- After your Budokan concert, has your style of singing changed?
YUI: I realized that without using too much force, I can easily bring up my true-st voice. I also try that during my recording now.

- Was ‘I wanna be’ done after Budokan, too?
YUI: Yes. Recently, I got the wish of carrying on with music forever. “Are you coming closer to becoming what you want?” (From the lyrics) I asked myself that as I wrote the song.

- The more senior people often say this. “It’s great to have been able to do this for a long time” What do you think?
YUI: I think, to be able to say that, is really sweet. It doesn’t mean I want to get stuck to doing something, but I want myself to grow up and become better, as I carry on doing it. It might be a difficult thing to do, though.

- Wow, you’re singing really profound stuff. And your voice is… (great)
YUI: It’s just very natural. (lol) All right, the curtains are up! – Something like that!

Note: This is obviously not a new article but I think newcomers (or those with goldfish memory like me) would appreciate the articles/interviews being posted again. Kinda nostalgic reading them again. =)
