- Living to the fullest now will transform the past into precious memories
After the outdoors filming today, YUI exclaimed, “Today’s weather is excellent I feel so good!”, as she sank into the chair and took the interview with a ‘sunny and rubicund’ expression on her face. The sense of satisfaction of completing her third album “I Loved Yesterday” was splashed all over her face. First of all, let’s talk about the title.
“In my single ‘Love & Truth‘, the lyrics said ‘I have decided to accept the past (and present), everything.’ Also, in my first Budokan concert, I attempted strumming and singing, a style which I originated from. As I did all these little things, I realized a common thought amongst all of them. And the phrase that popped up naturally in my head was ‘I Loved Yesterday‘. To translate it literally, it means ‘Watashi wa kinou wo aishiteita’.”
“If I were to use the present tense, ‘love’ . instead, it only emphasizes on the fact that I love the past (yesterday). But I think the past tense, ‘loved’, will truly bring out the message I want to get across.”
“The reason why I could say I loved yesterday owes to the fact that at that split second, I tried my best. And then I felt, if only I could be like that tomorrow too. Of course even when we try our best, there are times when things dont go well. But that reality is also actually giving us a certain kind of support and encouragement. Therefore, we want to treasure the past too. If we could look at ourselves in the past, and honestly say we loved ourselves in the past, that means we are able to face the future, isn’t it?”
“The past, the present, the future- The flow is a result of ‘ourselves working hard in the present’ (It is because of ourselves working hard right now, that will result in the flow of ‘the past-the present- the future’) The message does pierce through our hearts when we listen to the songs.”
In the song ‘My Friend‘, the ambiguous relationship of being more than a friend, yet less than a lover, is being described. It also gives us a glimpse at a part of YUI‘s ‘precious past’.
“Sometimes, something (that we are looking for) is right next to us, yet we just simply do not take the initiative (to confirm). When we realize, we have separated, without even saying ‘I like you’ or even ‘good bye’. (bitter laugh) And that is something that warms my heart now. It is because something like that had happened, that makes me want to work hard right now.”
In the song, ‘Laugh Away’, that is featured in Glico Watering Kissmint CM, we can also see a scenery of the plains that comes from YUI‘s heart.
“With the sea nearby, and hills around, it is something that is similar to the place I was brought up in. At the time when I was still picking up sea shells, I wasn’t thinking of any of such difficult stuff. (laughs) Every now and then, when I imagine going back to such scenery again, I feel really relaxed.”
“The fact that we can reset our feelings every time we travel back in our memories, shows that the past is indeed precious. ”
There is a song that is an evidence of working hard right now. It is ‘Love is all‘. The vitriolic and harsh out-blast (in the song) is overwhelming.
“During the interview, there are times when I feel that the interviews have not even listened to my songs (properly), so I exploded (laughs). It was a song I created with all my mind, so I hope you would listen to it with your heart. Everyone said that they were taken aback when they heard.”
The album is YUI‘s way of living. Indeed, unmistakably, a product with hard work and thought put in.

T/N: AH-HAH, now I know what she means in the song ‘Love is all’! She was blasting the interviewers who dont know anything about her. And I found her explanation about ‘I Loved Yesterday’ really meaningful. Another classic.
