Yesterday, M-ON! MONTHLY ICON YUI aired in Japan. The broadcast features a 50 min talk and interview session with YUI-san. The interview covers YUI’s recent activities overseas and also discusses her new album “HOW CRAZY YOUR LOVE.”

[ Please excuse my rough translations, they may be wrong, I'm summarizing with my limited Japanese. Feel free to join the forum to help with translations!]

The first half of the interview discusses her time spent overseas in Hong Kong and Shanghai. A lot of the Hong Kong footage is re-used from M-ON!’s recent broadcast of her Hong Kong concert. Footage can be also found on the Limited Edition HOW CRAZY YOUR LOVE CD+DVD which features the full-length YUI LIVE 2011 HONG KONG HOTEL HOLIDAYS IN THE SUN concert that was held on June 26, 2011.

YUI speaks about her first time arriving in Hong Kong (Maritime Mall and performing street live at Avenue of the Stars in Hong Kong) and taking a double decker bus through the city. The interviewer also speaks with her about the Hong Kong neon/sign boards being very close and YUI comments on how she felt like she could touch them but of course she had to be careful. *rough idea of what they talked about* They talk about the concert as well and mentions the Hong Kong MC and how they all welcomed her warmly. She also mentions about the encore part.

Moving onto Shanghai, YUI is seen going to Xin Tian Di to perform a street live. She also speaks a little Chinese saying: “Qing Duo duo guan zhao” which may be equivalent to “yoroshiku onegaishimasu” in Japanese so “Please look after me/Please take care of everything.”

The video footage also features the Shanghai fans speaking words of support to YUI too. One Chinese girl gets to speak a short Japanese message to the camera haha. There are a lot of photos of YUI walking through popular tourist locations in Shanghai. She visits The Bund and takes photos across from Pu Dong. As YUI walks along The Bund she mentions how it feels like Europe. (YUI so observant! The Bund’s architecture style is art deco/neo classical/art nouveau. Shanghai is China’s earliest major trading port hence a lot of Western/European influences–my history lesson done here)

YUI is amazed by the lights of the cosmopolitan city and notes the LED lit cruise boat that passes along and says it’s cute.

YUI is also seen reading people’s supportive messages for Japan. YUI is touched by the people’s feelings and messages as leaves her own message in a book thanking everyone for their support for Japan.

Throughout the interview, YUI’s new album HOW CRAZY YOUR LOVE is played and the interviewer asks YUI about a couple of the songs she’s written. They also featured a short landscape video sequence for the short interlude song with the lyrics to “Good night.” The interviewer and YUI talk about how she really wanted to put the feelings to create such an image.

They move onto talking about “Green a.live” and how it is placed as the last song in the album. YUI spends a lot of time discussing about the song and Japan. She mentions the time she spent in Miyagi with the students and speaks a lot about the feelings she puts into the song and how she wants to convey the message to people to continue striving for their dreams.

Interviewer: First of all, give us your thoughts on the album title.

YUI: It holds the meaning of ‘how much is your affection’. I used the word ‘LOVE’ in the title, but I wanted it to mean a big ‘emotion’. Like support or a guideline for life… In a broad sense, I think it turned out to be an album that asks, ‘What are your emotions?‘ By using ‘LOVE’, I felt that it was the best way to deliver these feelings in simplest form.

Interviewer: What kinds of emotions were stirred when you wrote these songs?

YUI: When I made my debut, there was a time when I only sang for myself. Now, I have the opportunity to meet many people, and by remembering those peoples’ faces, all kinds of feelings surface. I write songs while thinking, ‘I want them to smile’ or ‘I want them to do their best tomorrow’.

Interviewer: Various emotions are expressed in your songs; it’s hard to believe that one woman wrote them.

YUI: Thank you. As one being, I have these feelings and emotions… What I hate, I hate; and what I like, I like. I want to be able to express them properly. I wanted to bring out that breadth and waves of emotion. I usually write what I feel directly. I’m happy when people tell me they can relate to those things. That is why I want to have a communication where I can ask the listeners, “How do you feel?” So I chose to put “Green a.live” at the end of the album, since it’s a song that contains many questions. Although I sing calmly in the song, the wave of emotion is so big.

Interviewer: It’s a song that was written after you visited the disaster-stricken areas right?

YUI: Yes. There are a lot of question marks, but it’s a song with many factors. It was hard to put them into words because I wanted to make it carefully. Also, when I finished the song, I was able to think, “This is me right now”. There are a lot of emotions within me that I haven’t unraveled yet. So I realized that I have to face it, instead of putting an end to it.

Interviewer: Other than “Green a.live”, how did you figure out the order of songs?

YUI: With every work, I make the order of songs with variation… rock songs then acoustic songs; like that, I make efforts to create ups and downs so people won’t get tired of it. When I make a rock song, it’s strange, but I want to make an acoustic song afterwards. This album has many new attempts, but I worked hard to make it balanced. Tthe song I wrote while wanting to change the scene is “Good Night”. At first, it was a song you could hum to but as I was making it, I became greedy. In the end, I recorded it properly and added a chorus to it.

Interviewer: To be specific, what are ‘new attempts’?

YUI: For example, “Separation” has a funky rhythm, something I’ve never tried before. I made it while imagining bits and pieces of rhythm quickly being added into the song… Although I was told, “That’s not a funk rhythm“, I feel I was able to bring out a groovy effect. Then, I thought it would be fun to add painful lyrics, and started writing. I wrote “Lock On” as the theme song for “Kaito Royale”, so I made the song with the theme of ‘thrill’. Since the drama is set in a world of treasure stealing, I wanted it to have a kind yet fun outlook on the world. To make it even more thrilling, I changed the key during the middle, but it was difficult. When I first received the offer to write the theme song, there was no script, so I read the draft. I knew a little about it through games and CMs, which helped me to create an image of the drama.

Interviewer: The music video is also thrilling.

YUI: It was a fun experience to run around here and there. I was exposed to many new things, such as dressing up as a casino dealer. It’s fun to take a look into a world you don’t know. I had a real dealer teach me the behavior, and was told that I couldn’t even smile. I thought it would be impossible for me.

Interviewer: You challenged yourself to simple triple (three beats in each measure) in “Cooking”.

YUI: Ever since my debut, I always wanted to make a song with simple triple. But back then, I couldn’t operate a computer that well, and I wasn’t able to step record… Now, I’ve become accustomed to a computer so I typed in the drums myself, then created the melody. It was by feel, but I had fun. The song had a warm feel to it, so I think the kind lyrics accompanies the song’s outlook. I felt that every girl has the feeling of wanting to make food for the person they love, so I sang the song while imagining I was near that person.

Interviewer: YUI-san’s tone of voice is gentle, so I felt that atmosphere.

YUI: Thank you. I’m usually gentle… I’m lying. “Get Back Home” sounds like I mixed more sighs than usual. It could be a song to myself saying, “You had a bad day, but let’s be thankful to the people around you“.

Interviewer: What kind of message do you want to deliver through this album?

YUI: I challenged myself to all kinds of new things in the album, so it would be nice if people who listen to it are able to think, “Let’s try something new”. I want it to become a strength for people to move forward. I continue to make music exactly like the days when I first moved to Tokyo. The excitement when I listen to music has never changed. As the sender, that is what I want to deliver. Tell them, “I’m doing it so freely!” Freedom could be something you can do at ease at a limited extent. It’s different from being able to do as I please, but I want to become a person who can tell people that I’m doing it freely. Although to be honest, I actually like doing as I please.

Interviewer: Your nationwide tour will start soon.

YUI: The album jacket was shot on Hikawa Maru (ocean liner) in Yokohama, but it was also taken in the image of the tour. I want to create a place where people can relax and enjoy.

Interviewer: In June, you held your first overseas live in Hong Kong, and in September, you held a street live in Shanghai. Have your thoughts on the live concerts upgraded?

YUI: The minute I stepped on stage in Hong Kong, my heart was about to break by seeing the amount of people. However, during the street live, I felt alive. Lives aren’t about ‘you against the audience’, but , ‘you and I’. So I was able to sing while thinking, “I am singing to you alone.“ I hope to sing again somewhere else. For this upcoming tour, I’m going to places I haven’t gone before, so I’m looking forward to the beautiful scenery and the delicious food. Also, meeting new people.

————————————-

Sina entertainment news: Popular Japanese singer YUI had an exclusive interview with us in Shanghai recently. She participated in the japan week karaoke competition and even had a street performance, performing her latest composition and her signature song. YUI also revealed that her latest release will be sold in china. Talking about her favourite chinese star, she loved Jackie Chan the most.

(Sina entertainment news – S)

S: Its your first time coming to Shanghai. Have you performed in China before?
YUI: I went to Hong Kong during June, and held a concert there. It’s my first time coming to China (mainland).

S: What is your impression of Shanghai?
YUI: The buildings in Shanghai are very unique, and the city view is beautiful. Shanghai’s food are also delicious!

S: What are your feelings of being the ambassador for better China-Japan ties*? (sorry couldn’t really find a better term for this)
YUI: I felt a lot of love. Love from friends and support. Chinese fans are also very warm.

S: Heard that you love eating sweet and sour pork, have you tried China’s?
YUI: Yes, I really love eating sweet and sour pork. Previously in japan, I had worked in a Chinese restaurant. That’s the first time I had tried sweet and sour pork, and I liked it ever since then. Although China’s sweet and sour pork taste a little different from Japan’s, it is still very delicious.

S: What kind of music do you like?
YUI: I love music a lot, as long as it’s good music, I will like it. There isn’t any genre that I dislike. (I’m not sure how to phrase this, but she’s sort of saying that she doesn’t ‘discriminate’ any particular genre.)

S: This time in China, have you prepared any special performance for your fans here?
YUI: I’m joining the Japan week karaoke contest, and will also perform a street live in Jing An District, singing my latest song and a song created not long after I had debuted.
(I’m not really sure if this interview is before or after her performances, but I assumed that this is before, because of her clothes)

S: Anything you would like to say to your fans? What’s the song you would like to recommend to chinese fans the most?
YUI: I’m really thankful for all your support for me. Recently, my album “HOLIDAYS IN THE SUN” was released in China. That was produced through challenging myself repeatedly. I hope everyone will listen to it.

S: Do your have any intention to hold a concert in China in the near future?
YUI: Being able to hold a concert in China is a very media thing* to me, I will work hard and hope that this can be achieved. (*that’s a direct translation. not really sure what she’s saying)

S: Do you have any Chinese singer or actor/actress that you like? Who do you like most?
YUI: For example like Jackie Chan, I like him a lot.

–

Oricon Style [Oct.1.2007] YUI Special Interview: What’s the most important for writing songs?

From:http://www.oricon.co.jp/music/interview/071001_01.html

Translated by: Xerith-sama

Its been 4 months since YUI’s release of the single “LOVE & TRUTH”. The title tune “LOVE & TRUTH” was used as the theme song for the movie “Closed Note” (starring Erika Sawajiri and Yuko Takeuchi).

— Before writing the melody and lyrics for the song “LOVE & TRUTH”, you began by reading the original novel and the movie script, didn’t you?

[YUI]: Since I normally enjoy reading novels, I read it just as I always would with any novel. In particular, the fact that I was to write the theme song for the movie was not something I consciously thought about while I was reading.

— That’s because you wanted to be fully absorbed into the world of the novel, right?

[YUI]: Yes. I wanted to see what I would feel from the novel and what I thought about it. It was fun.

— So when you finished reading it, what were your thoughts?

[YUI]: Although until about midway, the mood was relatively lighthearted, but as you progressed towards the end, there were quite a few of more sombre scenes. When I just finished reading the novel, the heart-wrenching feeling was overwhelming.

— Based on such emotions/thoughts, what kind of theme song would YUI san create?

[YUI]: Well, I didn’t want the song to end solely with feelings of sorrow… Of course while facing the themes present in both the original and in the movie script, I was asked to write the song from my own unique view and that wasn’t the world I had imagined, writing what you felt directly into song is the most important part of writing music.

— And what were these direct feelings that you felt?

[YUI]: I wanted to combine the wish of Ms. Ibuki (played by Ms. Yuko Takeuchi) to continuously encourage her students and the feelings of Ms. Kae (played by Ms. Erika Sawajiri) into a powerful appealing melody.

— Was the idea to add a string arrangement always there from the start?

[YUI]: No it wasn’t. The base melody and chord progressions were written first. After that, I considered whether the song fits well with the movie and decided that adding strings would make a better match with the movie. We added in the string arrangement and that’s how the theme song of “Closed Note” was completed.

— In the end, it became a powerful song, which at the same time, also had its gentle, thoughtful and sorrowful parts, right?

[YUI]: The song was named “LOVE & TRUTH”, which although involves placing two most powerful words next to each other, these words also invoke a sense of sorrow and tenderness at the same time. Although different people may see these words in different ways, I wanted to sing a pure and simple love story and that was how I finally arrived at “Love and Truth”. I also included the powerful feelings of accepting everything from the past into the song.

— The second track called “Jam” uses lyrics which peeks into YUI-san’s everday live. Words like “drum”, “guitar”, “leather jacket”, “punk rock”, “live house”, there were alot of these rock words.

[YUI]: I think the lyrics are realistic, but maybe a but of mischievousness came through (laughs). As much as possible, I kept it as indie band style and had fun both while writing the song or performing it live. I wanted to write a song expressing my enjoyment of music.

— The third track was the acoustic version of a previous single called “My Generation”.

[YUI]: I’ve always put an acoustic version of a previous single as the third track since my debut single. Since I always used to perform on the streets with an acoustic guitar before my debut, by using a simple acoustic guitar again, I would be able to recreate the same atmosphere from that time and make a version of “My Generation” different form the original using the sound of a simple acoustic guitar to deliver the song.

The encompassing voice around the axis that is the piano, this song doesn’t feel like anything you have done up until now. Please tell us what was the thought process behind your new song 「to Mother」.
Lately, I had the oppurtunity to sing songs about supporting people, however, this time I made it more about myself and important things.

Piano and guitars make different melodies don’t they? You fully know how to use both right?
Because usually when writing songs I used the piano, mainly due to this I’ve learnt to play the piano.

You did not write this for a film or a commercial (no tie in), after a long time just a plain new song, just a song written for yourself. So how did you choose the theme “mothers”?
The title is “to Mother”, however, it is not just this it is also for all “great things”. “Mothers” are obviously great, for myself and everyone who’ll listen I tried to write about things like “greatness” “important”.

Because its familiar, important and also a great existance was it hard to make the song (form)?
It wasn’t exactly difficult/troublesome, however, I was wondering if my feeling was correct (or is it conveyed my feelings correctly?) Thats what i thought. I faced it head on and tried to make it as honest as possible.

After going to the capital Tokyo and also at the same time living apart form each other. If we look at things now, what kind of person is your mother to you?
She is someone who I am really grateful to.

Also, when singing to Mother, did you have a change of heart and did you realise anything for the first time?
kindness is cruelty…

The instant I heard the phrase “If i couldn’t lie I don’t think i could continue living” , “I hate people who don’t even lie even more” from the 1st album’s 「Swing of lie」came to mind, was this idea inherited from your mother and is just reconfirming it. “if kindness is around us we’ll unintentionally take it for granted” I feel it really is just YUI like. In this song how do you think you are presented here?
If I realise it, it’ll be too late and I will regret it, the opposite of that idea

For the listener, sometimes mothers, sometimes friends, sometimes childhood friends …… according to the day or time you listen the way it sounds changes, this is my honest impression. YUI yourself, how would you like it to be heard?
Without specifying who, I think you should think about important people and things in general.

I’m thinking that the recording process was not too dissimilar to recording with a guitar, do you have anything to add?
It was done in a relaxed and fun manner.

Is each time the same (?) During things like recording was there a interesting episode please tell.
It’s not an interesting episode but, stylist Date san gave birth around the time the song was made. In the way “to mother” we said we wanted make the song with/for her. So one week after she gave birth she participated in the jacket photoshoot, we were very happy.

In the music video we can see you playing the piano, is it likely you’ll do this live?
I think it would be nice if I am able to.

On the second track 「Tonight」’s intro, its a guitar exploding rock number. At what point in time did you complete this song?
I made the guitar riff. The song has the image of it being played live.

The unison of the powerful guitars, the memorable guitar rift, the impressionable acoustic guitar phrase ．．．．．． the various developing guitar arrangement and sound make up, from the creation was the image made to match it?
When the riff was made, the sound and image of the song was immediately created

And then, one night’s work. with the passage of time the changing feelings, like a spinning expression the changing voice is very impressionable. What were you thinking when inserting this song?
It has the image of sneaking out of a party.

Plus 「GLORIA」’s acoustic version, the attack of a new single opening the curtains of your 23rd what kind of year do you want to have?
To enjoy at “my pace”, (not sure but) I think it would be nice if I could meet everyone during lives.

YUI is now 23 years old, looking at these photos, I feel you’ve become some what of a older sister.. What do you think about it.
I want to change in a meaningful way, but there are also parts of me that won’t/haven’t changed.

How have you spent your time recently? What are the general state of things?
I am recording. In order to make a good piece of work I am trying my best. I’ll be in your care (thank you)/yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

This interview is related to FROM ME TO YOU release.

I have become strong, did you ever think of that?
Yes I did!, for example in Tomorrow’s way there is a lyric that says “I feel like crying”
But now, even if feel like crying, I can hold my tears good enough

Where there times before were you did cry?
There were times where I would just let all my tears go. However, but now it’s the contrary. Perhaps I could turn myself into the opposite. I was weak in the beginning, so I wanted to become strong. I thought “I have to pretend to be tough”. Now I write about this revolving feelings. I expressed this feeling like being in a maze on these lyrics and words. However, comparing with my older self, I think I have become a little stronger.

I don’t put that much thought into it, I use it to express different things in the songs. “atashi” and “watashi” both are images of a girl but “atashi” is probably a bit younger and stuff like that. However, for “boku”, I tend to write it with an innocent feeling.

So when you write with this distinction is it kinda already decided naturally inside you?
Yeah, I don’t decide to do it before writing. It just naturally comes out this way.

So for words like “mama” too.
It just comes out naturally. Even though I don’t usallly say words like “mama” (Haha). However, all the feelings I put in the lyrics they are certainly somewhere inside of me, when I want to express these feelings, I’ll just naturally write things like “mama”.

Taken from akabanekouji

Deciding to quit school was a tough decision wasn’t it?
Yeah it was. My teacher also said this to me “Although there are people who quit school for their dreams, there aren’t any that are able to make their debut!” they say this for my sake, they say it out from their love, however, while I accept their feelings for me, I will continue down my own road.

There were no hesitations at all?
Yeah, there wasn’t any. Even if I quitted school, “As I thought, I have no choice but to do music”. I think it was a time of great enrichment.

In My Generation Lyrics “Freedom from the beginning” is written. You certainly had that feeling right?
I’ve been thinking of those lyrics since that time. If you only have the resolution, you can be free from the beginning… It’s just that since I decided for myself, I can’t leave my choices in someone else’s hands.
At that time there were another words resounding inside of me too. “People have the freedom to make a choice, but this comes with a responsibility” even though that’s the way it is I also feel great sympathy with people. Through those words, I received the strength to go forward.

When you were 16, you already understood “I have to take responsibility for what I have decided for myself”, that’s amazing. Well, YUI did you have an rebellious period?
Eh, a rebellious period? Well… I guess you could say so, even though I don’t really know what a rebellious period is.

In the song “The feeling was a bit different than breaking a glass window.” is part of the lyrics. This means “My decision is different from a little simple hostility or being selfish” right?
Ah, yes that’s so. Well, I probably doubted (in system of society or in life) many times before. When facing things I can’t comprehend, I often wanted someone to explain things to me clearly.

Since your debut have you ever thought “I don’t really understand this, I wish someone could explain”
Yeah thats so… However, without giving up, while going forward little by little, somehow or other there are times when things just come into view. By prioritising various things within myself, I feel that I haven’t made a mistake.
